Don’t Get Lost in Translation!

As we build our community, exchanging information and ideas, it is important that we are all on the same page so to speak.  On this page you will find a glossary of terms that you may find in posts, or on Fred’s POPCASTs.  This is a fluid listing, so if you don’t find what you are looking for, shoot us a message and let us know.

Ommer Block - Under the Proof of Work (PoW) consensus mechanism, miners received rewards for mining a new block, but sometimes a block was mined right after the previous one, creating competition. This subsequent block, previously known as an "uncle" and now referred to as an "ommer," could be incorporated into subsequent blocks, and the miner of the original ommer would receive a partial block reward. All of this functionality was deprecated with the launch of the Beacon Chain.
On-Ramp, Off-Ramp - Drawing from a metaphor in the American highway system, "on-ramp" represents the process, tool, or service provider for converting fiat currency into blockchain tokens. Conversely, "off-ramp" refers to exchanging on-chain assets for their equivalent value in a specific fiat currency. Numerous service providers offer such services, and MetaMask users can access them through the "Buy Crypto" feature.
Oracle - In general, an oracle is an entity or individual relied upon to report the outcome of an event. Within a blockchain network, an oracle (either human or machine) facilitates the transmission of data to a smart contract, which can then verify an event or specific outcome.
