Don’t Get Lost in Translation!

As we build our community, exchanging information and ideas, it is important that we are all on the same page so to speak.  On this page you will find a glossary of terms that you may find in posts, or on Fred’s POPCASTs.  This is a fluid listing, so if you don’t find what you are looking for, shoot us a message and let us know.

relayer - In the field of Decentralized Finance (DeFi), a relayer refers to any party or entity hosting an off-chain order book. Relayers facilitate traders in discovering counterparties and securely transferring orders between them. 0x is an example of a popular Ethereum relayer protocol.
rollups - Rollups are part of the toolset and infrastructure developed as scaling solutions for the Ethereum network. They involve networks that prioritize transaction computation and smart contract functionality, "rolling up" these transactions to Ethereum Mainnet for secure verification. There are different technical approaches to rollups, such as Zero Knowledge (ZK) rollups and Optimistic rollups, each with distinct characteristics. Prominent examples include Arbitrum and Optimism. See the entries on these rollup types for more in-depth discussion.
RPC - RPC (Remote Procedure Call) is a technology used to transfer data between endpoints. JSON-RPC, the full name of this technology, provides further details.
rug pull - A "rug pull" refers to a cryptocurrency scam resembling a traditional financial pyramid scheme. In this scam, the token creators generate hype by injecting liquidity, conducting airdrops, and employing other schemes. Once investors contribute and boost the token price, the creators liquidate their majority share, leaving investors with minimal value or loss.
