Don’t Get Lost in Translation!

As we build our community, exchanging information and ideas, it is important that we are all on the same page so to speak.  On this page you will find a glossary of terms that you may find in posts, or on Fred’s POPCASTs.  This is a fluid listing, so if you don’t find what you are looking for, shoot us a message and let us know.

Cryptocurrency - A digital or virtual form of currency that uses cryptography for secure transactions.
Cryptography - The practice of secure communication through the use of codes and encryption techniques.
Decentralization - The distribution of control and decision-making authority across a network rather than a central authority.
Decentralized Exchange (DEX) - An exchange that operates on a blockchain, allowing users to trade directly without a central authority.
Exchange - A platform where cryptocurrencies can be bought, sold, and traded.
Fork - A split in the blockchain network resulting in two separate versions of the blockchain.
ICO (Initial Coin Offering) - A fundraising method for new cryptocurrencies, similar to an initial public offering (IPO).
Market Cap - The total value of a cryptocurrency calculated by multiplying its current price by its circulating supply.
Mining - The process of validating and adding new transactions to the blockchain using powerful computers.
NFT - When discussing Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs), the term "fungibility" pertains to the interchangeability of an object with another. For example, a single dollar is fungible as it can be exchanged for any other dollar. Artwork, on the other hand, is generally considered non-fungible because paintings or sculptures possess varying qualities, values, or attributes. An NFT (Non-Fungible Token) is a unique digital asset that has no equivalent. This distinguishes it from cryptocurrencies like ether, which are fungible in nature.
