MAXI MISNOMERS
BY FRED BARBER
Maxi-Misnomers are the widely repeated idioms and Bitcoin Statements we hear regularly, but factually incorrect statements about Bitcoin that are often accepted as truth—especially within maximalist circles. After attending countless events and browsing various Bitcoin forums and websites over fourteen years, I noticed a recurring trend: people confidently spreading misinformation about Bitcoin, whether it’s about the protocol, mining, decentralization, or economic incentives. These inaccuracies are rarely challenged, which poses a serious risk to the health of the ecosystem. As new users enter the space, they absorb these Maxi-Misnomers as gospel, unknowingly reinforcing flawed narratives. To track and eventually correct these misinterpretations in a lighthearted way, I began compiling a list and coined the term “Maxi-Misnomers” to describe them—false Bitcoin facts dressed up as truth, often passed down through repetition and reputation rather than research. I offer about half of my list of maxi-misnomers now to set a baseline in the book. As our anti-hero states before, the misinformed maximalist along with time would be an adversary’s greatest allies. Why? because “The most dangerous person on the battlefield is some one that says they know something that just isn’t so!?” My list it to convert maximalists into “mature maximalist” that acknowledge the shortfalls and seek to help improve the network and ecosystem.
For those unfamiliar with Bitcoin Maximalism, here’s a brief recap. The following descriptions also serve as a reflection for self-identified maximalists to understand how others perceive their stance.
A Bitcoin Maximalist is a person in the cryptocurrency industry that typically has the following characteristics:
- Exclusive support for Bitcoin: They believe Bitcoin is the only cryptocurrency needed and usually dismiss the value of other cryptocurrencies, often referred to as “altcoins.”
- Strong belief in decentralization: Bitcoin Maximalists emphasize the importance of decentralization and view Bitcoin as the most decentralized cryptocurrency.
- Focus on security: They prioritize security and consider Bitcoin’s robust network and immutability as essential features.*
- Limited supply: “Maxis” often highlight the limited supply of Bitcoin (21 million) as a key advantage.**
- Resistance to change: They tend to be skeptical of significant changes to Bitcoin’s protocol or consensus rules.
- Criticism of altcoins: Maximalists often view altcoins as inferior or even scams. (Sometimes referring to alt-coins as 💩-coins)
- Emphasis on store of value: They see Bitcoin primarily as a store of value rather than a medium of exchange.***
- Long-term perspective: Bitcoin Maximalists usually take a long-term view, focusing on Bitcoin’s potential as a global reserve currency.
Please note that not everyone who supports Bitcoin identifies as a maximalist, and opinions within the community vary.
My goal is for every maximalist and user to seek truth and genuinely understand Bitcoin. However, I’ve found at least one misconception in every book I’ve read, which inspired my ’21 Maxi Misnomers’ series. Just for the record, I am maxi-ish not a maximalist.
